If you’ve never moved before (or even if you have) included in this post are some moving tips that our team believes can help you avoid some stress on your moving day.

When to Start Packing

We suggest beginning the packing process at least 2 weeks out from your moving date.  Waiting until a day or two before you move to begin packing will just create more stress for you.  It will also cause you to either forget something or not leave enough time for you to realize how much stuff you actually have.  By beginning the packing process further in advance, you will save yourself money by allowing your mover to haul your stuff right out upon arrival instead of helping you pack up the goods you haven’t gotten to yet.

Moving is the Best Time to Downsize

There is no better time to get rid of all of the stuff that you don’t use or have been meaning to throw away then when you’re going through everything to pack it up anyway.  All of those old shirts hanging in your closet you don’t wear, furniture that you’re going to be replacing, or just general clutter that has been living in the dark corners of your basement for the past few years are perfect candidates to be purged.  This again will save you time and money on moving day by reducing the amount of items that need to go to your new home.

Proper Labeling

This will save you an immense amount of time on the back end of your move once in your new home.  You don’t want to be digging through each of your boxes trying to figure out what is where when you’re unpacking.  Properly labeling each box, with either markers or a color coding system to indicate which room a box belongs to, will enable you to clearly tell your movers which room a box/piece of furniture goes in and allow you to unpack swiftly and in the order you’d like.

Reserving Parking

This is something you definitely want to do at least a couple of weeks in advance.  If you have a driveway large enough for a moving truck this is not a concern for you.  But if you only have street parking available, you’ll want to visit your local city or town’s parking office website where you’ll typically be able to reserve parking for the date and location you choose and they’ll provide signs for you to post.  For example, the city of Boston makes it very easy online at https://www.boston.gov/how-reserve-parking-spot-your-moving-truck.

If you are moving into/out of an apartment building with elevators or a loading dock, you’re going to want to speak with the building management in advance as they will typically require a resident to reserve an elevator for moving and reserve truck access to the loading dock as well.

We hope these moving tips are helpful for you as your begin planning your move!  If you have any questions you are always welcome to contact our team for further advice on the do’s and don’ts of the moving process.
