When most people hire a moving company and begin the planning process for their upcoming move, it is typically with the expectation that your mover will bring all of your items to your final destination.  For the most part, that is true.  But there are a number of items your movers shouldn’t take as well.  Some of these items are illegal to transport in a moving vehicle.  And some of these items make much more sense to transport on your own, and at the end of the day will make your relocation easier.

Upon your request, your moving company should provide you with a list of items your movers shouldn’t take.  Some of the items that you’ll find on the list are quite obvious, such as ammunition, but others may be more of a surprise to you.  Knowing that these items cannot go on to the moving truck ahead of time will assist you in planning accordingly.

Hazardous Materials

Hazardous materials are basically anything that could be explosive, corrosive or flammable.  For obvious reasons, it is a major liability to have the items on a moving truck.  Not just for your moving company, but for the safety of all of your items in the back of the truck with the hazardous material.  Below is a list of hazardous material items your movers shouldn’t take with them on the truck.

Items Your Movers Shouldn't Take

Precious/Personal Items

The reason why precious & personal items make the list of items your movers shouldn’t take is mostly for your peace of mind.  More likely than not, your moving company is certainly equipped to relocate these items and will do a great job doing so.  We find that our customers are always more comfortable making a small box of their prized posessions and moving them personally.  This can include many items such as jewelry, important documents, money, checkbooks, keys, etc.

First Night Box

Having a first night box that you move by yourself in your own vehicle is a great way to reduce some stress on moving day by ensuring you have everything that you will need for the next 12+ hours.  This way you don’t need to dig through boxes for hours right when you move in to find a particular item.

Your first night box should include things like bed linens, toiletries, chargers to your devices, change of clothes and towels.  And anything else you know you will need to get you through that first night in the house before you tackle unpacking.

Hopefully this guidance of items your movers shouldn’t take will assist you as you begin the packing process before your move.  If you’d like a FREE moving estimate from our team here at Your Move, just fill out the Moving Request Form and we’ll be happy to assist you!
