Moving from one apartment to another can be just as difficult as planning a move for a 3 story home.  Our team came up with some helpful apartment moving tips to help make your moving day a breeze.  There are small details that you must consider when moving from one apartment to another that may not typically come into play when moving out of or into a residential home.

Apartment Moving Tips

Start Packing Early

One of the most critical apartment moving tips that we can provide is to start your packing process as early as possible.  Just because you don’t have a huge living space, doesn’t mean that it’ll take you less time to pack up.  Depending on how long you’ve been living somewhere, you’ve likely accumulated much more stuff over time than you originally had when you moved into your current apartment.  Try to set aside time a month out from your moving day to start going through items and developing a plan for what’s coming with you and where you’ll begin and end your packing.

Downsize

As we would suggest for anyone who is moving, this is the best time to downsize.  Go through all of your stuff and purge the items that you no longer use or need.  You’re going to be touching every single thing in your apartment anyway.  If you’re moving into an apartment that is smaller than the one you’re departing, you may also want to look into a storage facility as an option for putting items you don’t immediately need in a safe space for a long-term stay.

Color Code

Having a color coding system is one of our favorite apartment moving tips.  Choose a dedicated color for each room in your new apartment.  Use this color coding system to appropriately label your boxes and furniture with a color to designate which room they’ll be going into in the new location.  If you’re hiring professional movers for your move, this will save you a ton of time and money as you won’t have to dictate where everything goes upon arrival.

Measure Large Items

Just because your sofa fit easily into your current apartment does not mean it will so easily make its way into the your new one.  Take the time to get the dimensions of your new space, including the doorway and hallways leading into rooms that might look tight.  If there is an elevator in your building, check those dimensions as well.  The last thing you want to do is bring a large piece of furniture with you, only to have it hauled out because it won’t fit into your place.

Certificate of Insurance

One of the forgotten apartment moving tips that we often discuss with customers is the certificate of insurance.  If you are moving out of or into a professionally managed building, it is likely that they will require your moving company to provide them a certificate of insurance to verify that they hold the required insurance policies to operate in your building.  This is a very simple request that only takes a short time for your mover to complete (If they are unable to do so, you should look elsewhere for a mover).  It will also save you the headache of having your movers show up on moving day and not be allowed to work because this wasn’t completed.

Parking

Having your parking situation buttoned up before moving day is extremely important.  Whether you’re moving yourself with a rental truck or hiring a professional mover, either way you’ll need to make sure you have a space locked down.  If your building has a loading lock or dedicated space for trucks, speak with your building management about having that space reserved for your moving date.  If there is no dedicated parking spot, you may need to contact your local city/towns parking office to have a moving truck permit issued for in front of your building for your moving date.

Reserve the Elevator

Last but not least, is making sure that the elevator in your building is reserved for your moving day.  This is another task that can be completed through your building management team.  If the elevator is not reserved, you or your movers may need to wait long periods of time for the elevator as it will be shared with other residents coming and going throughout the day.  Streamline that process and your move will get done swiftly and you won’t spend unnecessary money on time lost waiting for the elevator.
