Change of Address

Moving always includes the change of address process. Unfortunately, these two things go hand in hand and it is inevitable. For many people, this is something that they dread doing and put off until the last minute. It can actually be pretty pain free if you have the right sources. The key is knowing exactly where and when to go to change different key pieces of your new address information.

Once you’ve gone through the process of packing all of your items, hiring a mover and getting settled on the big day, the last thing you want to do is learn that you’ll have to be without internet or heat for a few days. Or if you move on a Satuday and the Patriots play the following day, you’re sure going to want to have cable set up immediately.

Below we’re going to cover the critical details. We’ll discuss what you need to change, where you need to go to change them, and when we suggest doing so in the moving process.

The Post Office

You definitely want to start by doing a change of address with the post office. We suggest doing this at least a week or two before moving so you don’t miss any mail. This will allow you to set it up so that any mail sent to you at your old address will be forwarded directly to your new address. You can do this on line here and choose a specific date for your mail to begin forwarding.

Cable/Internet Provider

It’s pretty typical these days that your cable/internet provider will be the same company. If you’re one of the few left with a landline phone, its likely they provide this as well. You want to reach out to your provider a couple of weeks in advance of moving. You should request that they stop service at your current place on the date you’re moving out, and schedule service to be installed/set-up at your new place for the day of your choosing.

Gas & Electric

This may be the most important step in the change of address process. As soon as you know your move in and out dates, contact your Gas & Electric providers. Schedule a shut off with them for the end of your moving day at your current location. Also schedule for these critical utilities to be turned on at your new location either the night before move in, or on moving day. Nothing else works without these two utilities functioning.

Your Employer

This is important because your employer will at some point need to mail you critical information such as pay stubs, tax forms and more. It is not as time sensitive as your utilities, but something you should get done before it gets lost in the shuffle of life.

Shopping Sites

Again, this one is not as time sensitive as the first few when it comes the the change of address pecking order, but they are significant. Updating your new address in places you consistently get deliveries from like Amazon or a subscription service company will make life easier for you.
