When it comes to mattress storage, most people don’t have all of the facts that will keep your mattress safe and in tact for the long-term.  A mattress is a major investment these days, running most people over $1,000.  With proper maintenance and handling, a good mattress can also last someone over a decade, which is why we all need to understand what it takes to get the most time out of the investment in a solid mattress.

Now no matter the reason for putting your mattress into storage, the proper storage of that item is going to dictate how useful it will be to you in the future.  The incorrect storage of a mattress, even for just several months, can render it useless and not only ruin the investment in the mattress, but also the money you spent on the storage for the mattress as well.

Read our tips below to ensure that your mattress is stored properly and will be in the shape you left it when you’re ready to bring it back out of storage.

Mattress Storage

Clean the Mattress

To ensure proper mattress storage you want clean your mattress before it goes somewhere to sit for an extended period of time.  The best way to do this is to remove the sheets from your bed and sprinkle baking sode over the exterior of the mattress.  Let it sit for an hour or so.  This will give the baking soda time to remove odors and lift up any residue.  Then you should vacuum the mattress thoroughly.  Let sit for a couple of hours after vacuuming.  At this point your mattress should be ready to go into storage!

Use a Mattress Bag

Mattress Bags are an excellent way to keep your mattress clean and protected while in a storage facility.  Every reputable moving company and public storage facility will have mattress bags that you can buy for a few dollars that are made specific to your size mattress.  This small investment can make all the difference in your mattress storage experience by assisting in your mattress coming back to you in the same condition it left.  This bag will also help prevent moisture from getting to your mattress.  Use packing tape to seal the plastic mattress bag at the open end to keep the covering secure.

Store it Flat

Last but certainly not least, is that your mattress should always be stored flat, the same way it would be slept on.  When moving your mattress, it is absolutely fine to carry and transport the mattress on its side for short periods of time.  The mattress storage must be flat because it will be in this position for months or even years.  Storing the mattress on its side can cause damage to the coils and cause the inside to settle out of position.  This means your once comfy mattress won’t be so comfy anymore!  The best way to achieve this is to store your mattress on top of other flat, secure items.  If your mattress is extremely heavy, don’t store it on top of items that it could potentially crush.

Also, try not to store items on top of your mattress.  Being that items are typically in storage for quite a while, if you store stuff on top of your mattress it could leave exterior damage or ultimately damage the mattress springs if the items on top are heavy.
